National athletes fail to light up
KUALA LUMPUR Oct 10 — National athletes failed to live up to the mark on the first day of the MAAU Open at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil here today, as none of them met the Laos SEA Games qualifying mark. The Malaysian Amateur Athletics Union (MAAU) had organised the two-day meet to provide a platform for national athletes to try and qualify for the Laos SEA Games by meeting the qualifying mark set by the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM).
The 100m especially, seen as a preview of the blue-ribbon event in Laos, saw Malaysian runner Mohd Noor Imran languishing in seventh place with a time of 10.81s, well off the 10.33s qualifying time set by OCM. The race was won by Indonesia”s Suryo Agung Widiwo, winner of the gold medal at the Korat SEA Games in Thailand two years ago, with a time of 10.43s.
It was also an indication that the gold medal drought in the 100m and 200m sprint events of the SEA Games since 2003, when Nazmizan Mohammad won a sprint double in Hanoi when Vietnam hosted the games.
Before the meet, 11 athletes had already qualified for the Laos games under Category A, namely S. Mathialagan (800m), Yuan Yu Fang, Lo Choon Sieng, Teoh Boon Lim (20km walk), Lee Hup Wei (high jump), Mohd Hafizuddin Shahadan (pole vault), M. Vadivellan (800m, 5000m, 1,500m), Chan Woo Yew (marathon), Noraseela Mohd Khalid (400m hurdles), Roslinda Samsu (pole vault), Tan Song Hwa (hammer throw). The 110m hurdles final was also a disappointing one although a Malaysian won the race, Mohd Faiz Mohammad”s time of 14.20s in the absence of injured Robbani Hassan and Rayzam Syah Wan Sofian, was nowhere near the 13.95s qualifying mark. MAAU chief coach Hanafiah Nasir who witnessed the failure of his charges to live up to the mark, said it was now up to the MAAU to assess the potential of the athletes to be sent under Category B. He added that since Rayzam is the defending SEA Games champion in the 110m hurdles, he and Robbani who both have the best times in South East Asia, should be considered under Category B. Rayzam has clocked 13.98s while Robbani set 14.13s during the Taiwan Open in July. "I hope their injuries are not serious but I will refer them to the National Sports Institute (ISN) to check the seriousness of their injury,” Hanafiah told reporters here today. Expenses for athletes under Category A will be borne by the OCM while associations foot the bill for athletes under Category B. However, such expenses will be reimbursed if athletes under Category B, won gold or silver medals.
