MALAYSIA TO FACE THAILAND IN DECISIVE TIE OF GROUP A
Malaysia got the chance for a place in the semi-finals from Group A of the men’s football event when they beat Cambodia 4-0 in the match that was played at the Chao Anu Vong Stadium. Needing the win and the points to give themselves the chance of a place in the final four, the Malaysians rebounded from their troubled outing against Vietnam two days ago to slot one goal in the first half and three further goals in the second half for the win.
The win for the Malaysians has set a decisive clash against Thailand on December 11 with the winner set to book their place in the semi-finals of the competition. The Malaysians began with their trademark slow off the block at the start of the first quarter of an hour although Abdul Manaf Mamat missed from close range in the tenth minute. Several misses later saw Malaysia maintaining their composure before they finally broke through in the 34th minute when Manaf punished the Cambodian backline for a poor clearance.
With the score to the advantage of the Malaysians at the end of the first half, Cambodia gained an opportunity to draw level in the 52nd minute when they were awarded with a penalty. But Kouch Sokumpheak shot straight to Malaysian keeper Farizal Marlias after his first attempt was disallowed for an infringement.
That failure put pressure on the Cambodians and in their eagerness to go forward, they fell further behind in the 75th minute when Norshahrul Idlan Talaha latched on to a cross from S. Kunalan. Six minutes later, Kunalan made it 3-0 to the advantage of the Malaysians when he slammed home a rebound before Safiq Rahim converted a penalty five minutes to the end.
In the meantime, Thailand were on easy street this afternoon as a hat-trick from Sompong Soleb led the defending champions to a 9-0 win over Timor Leste.
Sompong led the free-flowing of goals with a strike as early as the third minute before wrapping up his three goals with further strikes in the 32nd and 76th minute. The other goal scorers for Thailand were Anawin Jujeen 37th and 86th minute, ApipooSunthornpanavej (46th and 60th), Kriangkrai Pimrat (44th) and Piyachart Harahan (49th).
